Users can manually turn this feature on or off. Actually, many people are not liking the side-by-side update of WhatsApp because they have been using the old version of WhatsApp for a long time, in which the chat list appears on the entire screen when WhatsApp is opened.
After the new update, the chat list opens on the left side and the chat window opens on the right side and the user can do two things at the same time. Some people were not liking this feature due to privacy also because when they are sitting among everyone then things start appearing in side by side view. But soon WhatsApp is going to give tablet users the option to manually turn on/off the side by side view.
